  • Traffic congestion costs 1.47 lakh crore per annum for India according a study in 2018 by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
  • Traffic issues cause so much inconvenience and frustration and hence need to be addressed.

Causes :

  • India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The average income of Indians is growing and thereby the number of privately owned vehicles is rising.
  • Though public transport is widely available in India, still it is not sufficient for the population of India. Especially in Metro cities, often public transport services are crowded. So, to travel peacefully people are opting for commuting in their own vehicles. And as a result more vehicles are coming on roads.
  • Lack of parking spaces is one of the main issues of traffic congestion in India. Due to lack of parking spaces people are forced to park their vehicles in front of the buildings often encroaching roads. This results in the less usable road.
  • Poor quality of roads is also one of the causes. Often this leads to repairs and thereby reducing the usable space.
  • Lack of proper implementation of traffic rules.
  • Due to lack of footpaths in many places, pedestrians are forced to walk on the edge of roads which further increasing traffic issues.
  • Regional inequality in economic development and creation of jobs is concentrated only in some areas. This results in the increasing density of population in metro cities.

Solutions :-

  • Distributing and diverting traffic by innovative methods such as constructing flyovers in the busy areas etc.
  • Improving the public transportation system.
  • Making the construction of parking spaces and footpaths mandatory.
  • Proper Implementation traffic rules.
  • Increasing taxes on privately owned vehicles also helps, but attracts so much criticism.
  • Developing small towns to prevent the push factor of migration to cities.

Conclusion :

Traffic issues cause not just inconvenience but also impacts economically. Traffic congestion issue can be solved by multi-pronged approach. Government should encourage public to use public transport services by improving them and simultaneously it needs to improve the roadways to cope up with the growing demand of transportation. And most importantly government must ensure regional distribution of development to avoid the concentration of economic activities in a few areas.

I think it would not have been a big issue if the roads, flyovers were constructed on time. The construction of flyover in my city Ahmednagar has started now which i have been hearing from 15 years.
Also the behaviour of people towards road safety needs to be noted. They willfully crosses even zebra crossing and wait for signal to be green.
Also the issue like poor, overcrowded, unhygenic public transportation needs to be improved.
Durability of road should be improvised as they drain out in rainy season.

Hi , yes my friend only construction of flyover is not solution. Flyover has to connect lanes and by lanes. In india 135 crore populations are there and vehicles are increasing day by day but roads are limited. If any city area traffic system is not good , everybody has to suffer. May be somebody has to go to hospital, may be others gheu have to go to office or catch train, or catch flight. Transportation system is not good then city cannot develop. Authority has to take care and solve the problem.

Traffic issues cause so much inconvenience and frustration and hence need to be addressed. Public transport to be encouraged. Road safety is to be imparted in schools.

According to me there is huge population in India and so our country faces phases the problem of traffic rules I think lack of footpath in India so people are travelling along the edges of road so is the major cause of accidents and poor quality of roads is also affecting the traffic rules and lack of awareness among the people is also the problem of road accident and jams so govt have to step to improve the quality of road and proper footpaths and aware the people about the rules
      Thanks

According to me traffic problem in India is a vital issue , populations are increasing day by day accordingly vehicles are increasing day by day . Public transportations are there but these are not adequate specially in Metro cities like Kolkata , Delhi , Mumbai etc I e those people economically sound they can afford their personal vehicle to travel peacefully as a result vehicles are increasing day by day but roads are limited and as well as parking space crunch. People purchase own vehicle but no parking space they leave their vehicles in front of their house or beside the road . In Kolkata specially Burrabazar area heart of the business place half of the portion of the road occupied by the vehicles .Those people travel in this area it’s horrible. Peoples have to catch flight , or distant places train or somebody have exam they have to leave house two hours before otherwise they will not be able reach their destination in a schedule time. Many upcoming flyovers are there but it is not enough. Traffic department has to take care for traffic violation and use illegally parking space etc

      I support Tinku Paul
The same problem is with Nagpur also… Nagpur traffic police has started many new schemes to reduce traffic but they are not enough… We Indians need more…
New laws such as ₹10, 000 for not wearing helmets,; ₹15, 000 for not wearing seat belts; ₹20, 000 for breaking traffic signals and abolistion of license for 6 months (min.) etc should be introduced… People think ‘ kam nikal raha h to hone do… bina matlab me apna time kyu waste karu/ helmet kharid ke paisa kyu waste karu.. ‘ etc…
