This is an old proverb. The literal meaning of this proverb is ‘moss doesn’t grow on a stone which is always on the move’. Mosses are very small plants that usually grow in wet areas.
The proverb’s meaning is – the person who does not stay in one place cannot form long-term relationships, wealth etc.
Although the old proverb is in a negative sense, the modern versions of the proverb modified it into a positive sense. One of the modern versions is – A rolling stone that gathers no moss, but it gains a certain polish. It means that a person who does not settle down in mediocre life, learns new things, archives success and will always be creative.
Moreover, in the present times, there is no need to stay in one place permanently to establish long-term relationships.
It can also be applied to politicians. A few politicians change parties frequently. They rarely get loyal followers.
It can also be applied to friendships. People who stick to their friends can establish long-term relationships, whereas people who change friends frequently can rarely form true friendships.
Many people change careers. But a few people change careers frequently, which can make them a jack of all trades and master of none.
A person who is in one business for a long time can become perfect in that business, unlike people who always switch businesses.

i belive if this proverb applies to current culture of gig economy that which is all abut upskilling and reskilling

Now definitely there is a need to use a modern version of this proverb as nowadays the world demands generalization over expertise. GenZ has so many options to explore that it’s impossible to stick to one, talking about a career. Earlier the population was less, only some people used to get chance to expertise in some fields like for example in old times only brilliant, scholar peeps would go to foreign and for higher studies. But today everything has changed, and people have evolved, simplest example I can give is just take your regular route outside and see how many dentists you can see in a line. The extraordinary talent has become rare today maybe because of the internet era. When YouTube was just boomed in this world only a few YouTubers were the first ones who introduced entertainment but now see YouTube has become a career option for many.

Talking about relationships then I think here there’s a need to follow the old proverb. Today casual relationships and sexual encounters have become common which harm youngsters. There is a constant exchange of energy which disrupts the healthy mindset and emotional well-being of a person and leads to a lack of stability. Nowadays people find it difficult to maintain friendships because there is a lack of trust and bondage. Trust requires time and time requires patience. Because of multiple options out there, people have lost their patience in giving time for their relationships to bloom, and people tend to end them hastily.

Coming to a conclusion when it comes to careers then definitely one needs to follow the modern version in order to become smart and achieve success in his life but when it comes to relationships the old version of the proverb wins the game.

It is actually a good thing. But to be frank, people who are jack of all and master of none are not good problem-solvers. They are on the rush for a new thing always. If these people can balance and be consistent even if they fail, and if they learn from their past mistakes and apply their brain in an balanced manner, they can achieve success much faster and easier than others who have been working consistent and slow.
