India is the second most populated country in the world with nearly a fifth of the world’s population. India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35. It is expected that, in 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years.

Millennials, also known as Generation ‘Y’ are the people who were born between 1985 to 2000 (some researchers use 1980 as the starting year, and some other researchers take the starting year as 1990). All of them have now turned eligible to vote. As these adults form the majority of the Indian population (more than 50%) they definitely will decide the future of India. They can also influence the voting behaviour of their parents and other elderly relatives.

One of the key grievances of the millennials is unemployment. As a majority of them have turned employable, jobs are a necessity for them. And, unfortunately, India has a stark scarcity of job avenues. According to the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) report, the unemployment rate was at an all-time high of 6.1 percent in 2017-18, the highest in 45 years.

The government has taken numerous steps to improve the job market. Some of them are Skill India initiative, Start-Up India and incubation centers, Make In India project to boost production in India, Insolvency and Bankruptcy code, easing restrictions on FDI in different sectors, etc. But, despite this, unemployment is still existent.

Millennials hold the key to the future of India. They are more informed, aware and connected to the world than any previous generations. The Lok Sabha elections of 2019, will definitely show what the millennials truly wish for their future.
